Plymouth was Montserrat’s former capitol and also the center of commerce, tourism, and industry until the eruption of the South Soufriere Hills volcano in 1997. Plymouth included a medical school, the Bramble Airport, an industrial park, elementary and secondary schools, shops, markets, the government offices, and a seaport. The loss of the capitol and these businesses has had a significant impact on the entire island. Over the course of the last decade, Montserratians have diligently worked to rebuild their island and replace everything that was lost.
