The service sector of employment dominates the economy of Montserrat by providing 81% of the gross domestic product. The earnings brought in from the service sector offset the island’s trade imbalance of exports and imports.
Of the various industries within the service sector, tourism is of most importance. The volcanic eruptions caused a major setback to the island’s growing industry. However, Montserrat is rebuilding to promote more residential tourism and also the increasingly popular eco-, or adventure, tourism. Promoting eco-tourism would incorporate the volcano as an attraction of the island.

A big proponent to the tourism industry is residential tourism. Individuals are attracted to residential tourism either as a means to retirement or as a means to holiday vacation homes. Tradewinds Real Estate is the primary agency for leasing and purchasing villas in Montserrat.
