Paul Gaugin's Caribbean Woman

Paul Gaugin (1848-1903). Caribbean Woman

The concept of gender, on Montserrat and otherwise, is often confused with the concept of sex. In fact, gender pertains to a network of power relations with two dimensions, material and ideological. Material relations concern access to, or allocation of, power, status, and resources. Ideological relations are those constructs of masculinity and femininity and how they operate in the state, society, and popular culture.

Gender is of great interest to sociologists. This website offers an overview of gender in the Caribbean and, more specifically, gender on Montserrat based on experiences on the island.
