In 1995 after the initial eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano, approximately one half of Montserrat was declared exclusion zone. Since this area was susceptible to multiple volcanic hazards, residents of Southern Montserrat were instructed to abandon home and community, leaving behind shells of former lives.
