Job Opportunities for Youth in Montserrat

Although you will not find as many children on the island today compared to the years before the eruption, you can still find young Montserratians in schools and in the work force.

and “goat water specialist” offered some personal insight into the job opportunities for youth on the island. He said that not everyone is “brilliant” enough to go to secondary school. He himself had only completed primary school. “After school days it was like working on the road for the government, cutting grass on the road and so forth…”

When asked about job opportunities on the island, a local teen of Montserrat mentioned that most children get a job straight out of secondary school. They work from 8am till 4pm, Monday through Friday. Today, the people of Montserrat are working to rebuild Montserrat and reconstruct the economy. One of their main projects involves finishing the construction of a new airport on the Northern part of the island. This process has provided many jobs for youth in the construction business. Young adults can also seek employment in the local bars, supermarkets, heliport, and the port.
