Joseph Meredith, the original manager of the store, was succeeded by W. E. Abercrombie.\u00a0 The store, at first, was entirely on the river side of the Pennsylvania Canal.\u00a0 Facing Locust Street, it was that part of the business that handled stoves, wood, tobacco and coal.\u00a0 The ‘main building was the grocery, general store, meat market, a warehouse and wagon shed.\u00a0 North of these (not shown on the photo) were a shed, a cold storage building, a slaughterhouse, and cattle pens.\u00a0 The “Company Store,” however, had no monopoly on the town’s business.\u00a0 By the mid-1880’s dozens of businesses were already operating in Steelton.<\/p>\n
